WhatsApp Read Receipts: How to Turn Off Blue Ticks

To turn off blue ticks in WhatsApp, open Settings → Privacy and switch Read receipts off. On Android, reach Settings from the three-dot menu; on iPhone, tap Settings or your profile picture. In one-to-one chats, others generally will not see when you read their messages, and you will not see when they read yours. Group read receipts and voice-message play receipts remain on.

What happens when you turn Read receipts off?

One-to-one chats

You stop sending and receiving normal read receipts. This is reciprocal: you also lose the blue-tick confirmation for messages you send to others.

Group chats

Group read receipts remain available. In a group, two blue ticks appear when everyone has read a message; the Message info screen can show individual read times.

Voice messages

WhatsApp says turning this setting off does not disable play receipts for voice messages. Do not assume playing a voice note is hidden.

Status views

With Read receipts off, you may not see who viewed your Status, and others may not see when you view theirs. For timing and other limits, see our separate Status privacy guide.

What do gray and blue ticks mean?

One gray check means sent; two gray checks mean delivered to the recipient's phone or a linked device; two blue checks mean read when a read receipt is available. Turning Read receipts off does not undo delivery or turn two gray checks into one. WhatsApp does not offer a setting to change check-mark colors.

Does turning off blue ticks hide your online status?

No. Read receipts, Last seen and Online are separate privacy controls in WhatsApp. Switching off Read receipts does not by itself hide when you are online or change who can see your profile photo. WhatsApp's built-in switch applies to your account's one-to-one chats; it is not a per-contact blue-tick toggle.

Why are blue ticks missing even when Read receipts are on?

A delivered message is not necessarily read. WhatsApp lists several other possibilities: the recipient has not opened the conversation, either person has disabled receipts, a connection or date-and-time problem exists, or a first message to an unfamiliar contact has not produced a receipt. Blocking is one possible explanation, never a conclusion from gray ticks alone. For a sent message, long-press it and choose Info to inspect available delivery and read details.

WhatsApp read receipt questions

Can I turn off blue ticks for only one person?

WhatsApp's Read receipts switch is an account-wide privacy setting for one-to-one chats, not a per-contact control. Group and voice-message exceptions still apply.

Can I still see when someone reads my messages?

Not in normal one-to-one chats while your Read receipts are off. The privacy choice works in both directions.

Do blue ticks disappear in WhatsApp groups?

No. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent for group chats. Two blue ticks show when everyone has read the message.

Does turning off Read receipts hide voice-note plays?

No. WhatsApp says voice-message play receipts cannot be disabled with this switch.

Do two gray ticks mean I was blocked?

No. Two gray ticks indicate delivery, not a read confirmation. Missing blue ticks can have several causes and cannot prove a block.

Does turning off blue ticks hide Status views?

It affects Status viewer visibility, but you also lose the ability to see who viewed your own Status. Change the setting before viewing; WhatsApp does not promise that changing it later erases an earlier view.
