What counts as starting a WhatsApp conversation?
MyChatWrap credits the sender of the first exported participant message and the sender of every first attributable message after a gap of at least four hours. It compares exact starter counts and shares and plots initiations across weeks, months or years. Four hours is a documented MyChatWrap boundary—not an official WhatsApp definition. The count shows who sent the next message after inactivity, not why they did so.

How conversation starts are counted
MyChatWrap processes exported entries chronologically. The first entry begins the first conversation window. A new window then begins whenever the gap from the immediately preceding exported entry is at least four hours. If the opening entry has an attributable sender, that person receives one start.
Starter attribution is sender-agnostic: the person who sent the previous message can also restart the conversation later. A start does not require a reply, greeting, question or new topic. Exactly four hours qualifies; a slightly shorter gap remains in the existing window.
Text messages, media placeholders and deleted-message markers can start a window when they retain a sender and timestamp. A system notice without a sender can create a new session but receives no participant credit and can affect the gap before the next entry.
Conversation starts versus last words
A conversation start is the first attributable message in the export or after at least four hours. A last word is the attributable message immediately before a following silence of at least eight hours.
A five-hour gap therefore creates a new starter without a last word. An eight-hour gap can create both. The final exported message is not automatically a last word because the file contains no following gap to measure.
Why the boundary is a methodology, not a fact
WhatsApp exports do not label conversation boundaries, topics or the reason contact resumed. MyChatWrap uses one consistent four-hour threshold so the same file produces a repeatable count.
Initiation can reflect schedules, habits, responsibilities, time zones or shared tasks. It cannot prove affection, effort, power, compatibility or relationship quality.
What the starter counter shows
- Attributed starts and participant shares using a four-hour boundary.
- Starter trends plus session totals, duration, size and balance.
- The sender before eligible eight-hour silences as a separate last-word measure.
What it cannot show
- Why somebody sent the first message after a gap.
- Effort outside WhatsApp or history missing from the export.
- Whether an initiation proves interest, affection, honesty or relationship quality.
