What does the WhatsApp Media Counter count?

MyChatWrap counts attributable exported entries classified as image, video, GIF, sticker, voice note, document or generic media. It reports message events rather than files, bytes or storage use. View-once is shown as an overlapping flag, so it is not added to the media total a second time.

Real media previews from Dashboard › Overview

The preview uses the production Overview StatCard and participant MetricCard with a fictional fixture, plus an accessible media-type table whose rows add up to the same total.

Total media events

Count recognized images, videos, GIFs, stickers, voice notes, documents and generic media entries across the selected export.

Participant comparison

Compare exact media totals and shares for two people, or rank attributed members in an exported group chat.

Media-type breakdown

Separate recognized media into images, videos, GIFs, stickers, voice notes, documents and other media.

View-once context

Count supported view-once photo and video placeholders as a subset of media rather than inflating the overall total.

Busiest media day

Find the calendar day containing the largest number of attributable media events in the export.

Period history

Compare media-sharing counts across populated weeks, months or years using the same classifications.

Count WhatsApp media in three steps

  1. 1. Export the conversation

Open the chat information in WhatsApp and choose Export chat. Without media is usually smaller; include media only when you also need available attachments.

  2. 2. Add the export

Drop the .txt or .zip above. Your browser parses recognizable placeholders and attached filenames, then attributes supported media entries to senders.

  3. 3. Read totals with context

Compare participant shares and media types, then use the busiest day and period history without treating quantity as proof of effort or meaning.

How WhatsApp media is recognized

MyChatWrap classifies exported placeholders such as image omitted, video omitted, GIF omitted, audio omitted, sticker omitted, document omitted and generic media omitted. Supported attached filenames can also supply a type when their extension identifies an image, video, GIF, audio file, sticker or document.

Recognition depends on what the export preserves and on the parser's supported placeholder and filename rules. Locale-specific wording, renamed files or unsupported extensions may fall into generic media, document or text instead of the category you expect.

How the total and type breakdown work

Each attributable entry classified as image, video, GIF, voice_note, sticker, document or media increments the sender's media total once. The message-type table separates those mutually exclusive parser categories, so its rows add up to the displayed media total.

A message event is not the same as an attachment inventory. One exported entry counts once even if a missing file, caption or multi-file share makes the original media package impossible to reconstruct from the transcript alone.

Why view-once is shown separately

A recognized view-once placeholder is classified as media and also marked viewOnce. The view-once count therefore overlaps the media-type rows: it describes a subset of recognized photo or video events and must not be added to the total again.

Expired items, unsupported wording and content absent from the export cannot be recovered. The counter can record that a supported placeholder existed, but it cannot display or inspect the original view-once content.

What media counts do not reveal

The analytics engine does not inspect the visual or audio contents, calculate file size or duration, determine whether an item was opened, or identify what an image or recording depicts. It counts recognized exported events.

Sharing more media does not by itself establish enthusiasm, effort, intimacy or conversation quality. Use the result as a description of the selected export, not a verdict about the people in it.

What the media counter shows

  • The number of attributable recognized media events in the export.
  • Participant totals, shares and a breakdown by parsed media type.
  • Supported view-once context, the busiest media day and period history.

What it cannot show

  • File size, storage use, duration or the contents of an attachment.
  • Whether somebody opened, watched, listened to or understood the media.
  • Items missing from the export or represented with unsupported wording or formats.

Count media without uploading the conversation

MyChatWrap parses the export and calculates media totals in your browser. Chat content, participant names and attachments are not sent to or stored on the MyChatWrap server, and no account is required.
