How can I see the most-used words in a WhatsApp chat?

Does WhatsApp show word statistics?

WhatsApp does not provide a complete ranked vocabulary report inside a normal chat. Its exported text contains the messages MyChatWrap can count in your browser.

What counts as a word?

Text is split at whitespace, lowercased, and stripped of punctuation at its edges. A normalized token must contain at least two characters. Grammatical and spelling variants remain separate.

Are words such as ‘the’ and ‘and’ removed?

Common function words and chat filler are excluded from displayed rankings and clouds but still contribute to total and unique-word statistics. The multilingual filter is curated rather than exhaustive.

Which languages does the filter support?

It includes common terms from English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Turkish, Indonesian, Arabic, and Hindi/Urdu in Roman script. Counting supports Unicode more broadly, but filtering can be less precise in mixed or transliterated chats.

Are ‘Coffee’ and ‘coffee!’ counted separately?

No. Capitalization is normalized and punctuation at the edges is removed, so both count as coffee. A form such as coffees or a misspelling remains separate.

Does Keyword Trend count only whole words?

No. It uses a case-insensitive substring search and counts each occurrence, so cat can also match catch. Use a more specific query when partial matches would be misleading.

Does the word counter work for groups?

Yes. It counts words for the group overall and attributes text-message words to the participants named in the export.

Are voice notes, media, and deleted messages counted?

Only text present in the export is analyzed as vocabulary. Voice notes are not transcribed, media is not read for text, and missing content cannot be counted.

Is the WhatsApp word counter private?

How does a WhatsApp word counter work?

A WhatsApp word counter reads text messages from an exported chat, separates them into words, normalizes capitalization and edge punctuation, and counts how often each word appears. MyChatWrap shows overall and participant rankings, word clouds, total and unique words, keyword trends, and longer-term vocabulary patterns. Common function words and chat filler are removed from displayed top-word lists, while total and unique-word statistics still include all valid normalized words.

How words are counted

Only text messages contribute to word counts. MyChatWrap splits text at whitespace, converts each token to lowercase, and removes punctuation or symbols from its beginning and end. Unicode letters and numbers are retained, and a valid token must contain at least two characters.

The counter does not stem or lemmatize words. Movie and movies remain separate, as do misspellings and spelling variants. COFFEE, coffee, and coffee! count together after capitalization and edge punctuation are normalized.

Why common words are filtered from the cloud

Every valid token contributes to total and unique-word statistics. Displayed rankings and clouds remove a curated set of common function words and conversational filler so more distinctive vocabulary is easier to see.

The list covers common terms in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Turkish, Indonesian, Arabic, and Hindi/Urdu in Roman script. It is practical rather than exhaustive: mixed-language chats, slang, transliteration, and cross-language collisions can create imperfect exclusions. You can hide an individual word from the cloud when it is not useful.

What vocabulary patterns mean—and what they do not

A signature word needs at least eight uses, with one participant contributing at least 75% of them. New and disappearing labels need at least six uses and six active months. Vocabulary mirroring requires a two-person chat spanning at least 30 days, repeated use by both people, and a delay before adoption.

These thresholds describe repetition and sequence. They cannot determine the full topic, tone, context, conscious imitation, intelligence, feelings, or relationship quality behind the messages.
