How does the WhatsApp Word Counter count words?
For each parsed text message with a sender, MyChatWrap trims the content, splits it at whitespace and counts the non-empty pieces. Those counts are added per participant and across the chat. Media, deleted markers and system events are not transcribed into words. The result is a reproducible token-like count, not a linguistic analysis of meaning.

What is counted as a word?
The method trims each text message and splits it wherever whitespace occurs. Every non-empty piece adds one to that sender’s total.
This deliberately simple method is repeatable across large exports, but punctuation, URLs, emoji joined to text and languages without spaces can behave differently from dictionary words.
Words versus messages
Message count measures how many separate message events a person sent. Word count measures the amount of text inside eligible messages. A person can lead one metric and not the other.
Average words per text message adds a third view. Read all three instead of turning one number into a judgment about effort.
What content is excluded?
Voice notes are counted as media events but are not transcribed. Images and documents are not OCR-scanned, and deleted message bodies cannot be recovered.
System messages and non-text message types therefore do not add ordinary words to participant totals.
Language and tokenization limitations
Whitespace splitting works naturally for many languages but does not perform language-specific segmentation, stemming or grammar analysis.
The count describes text units in the export, not vocabulary quality, meaning or fluency.
