How can I find the longest message in a WhatsApp chat?

Does WhatsApp show the longest message automatically?

No. WhatsApp does not provide a normal-chat record for the longest historical message, but exported text can be measured locally.

Is the longest message measured in words or characters?

Both measurements exist for different views. Participant comparison uses whitespace-separated words; the Hall of Fame all-time record uses JavaScript string length.

Why can the word and character winners differ?

Words have different lengths, punctuation and emoji contribute characters, and the two records use different units. The longest by words need not be longest by characters.

How are words counted?

The text is trimmed and split on whitespace. This is deterministic but not a language-aware tokenizer.

Do emoji count as characters?

They contribute to JavaScript string length, and some emoji or joined sequences use multiple UTF-16 code units. That value is not a grapheme-cluster count.

Are captions, media and voice notes included?

Only content parsed as an attributable text entry qualifies. The checker does not transcribe voice notes or read text inside media.

Can I read the longest message?

For a live local import, Overview can open eligible source messages. Public previews use fictional aggregate data and do not expose chat text.

Does this work for groups?

The all-time record works across attributed group text. Group member views can provide related per-member context, while the direct two-person card is limited to two participants.

What happens when two messages tie?

Only a strictly larger value replaces the record, so the earlier encountered maximum is retained.

Will an incomplete export change the result?

Yes. The checker can evaluate only text present in the selected file.

How does MyChatWrap find the longest WhatsApp message?

MyChatWrap evaluates parsed entries whose type is text and that have an attributable sender. It records each participant's greatest whitespace-separated word count for the side-by-side comparison, and separately records the chat's greatest JavaScript string length for the Hall of Fame. Those are different units, so a participant's word record and the all-time character record should not be treated as the same ranking.

How participant longest messages are counted

For every parsed text entry with a sender, MyChatWrap trims the content, splits it on one or more whitespace characters and counts the remaining tokens. If that count exceeds the sender's previous maximum, it becomes that participant's longest-message word record.

Punctuation attached to a token does not create another word, while whitespace separates tokens. The method is deterministic rather than a language-aware tokenizer, so languages that do not normally separate words with spaces may produce less intuitive results.

Equal word counts keep the earlier maximum because only a strictly greater count replaces the stored record.

How the all-time Hall of Fame record differs

The Hall of Fame compares the content's JavaScript string length, not its word count. It records the sender, timestamp, up-to-300-character internal preview and message identifier for the greatest text entry. Equal character lengths keep the earlier record.

JavaScript string length counts UTF-16 code units rather than user-perceived grapheme clusters. Some emoji and joined Unicode sequences can therefore contribute more than one unit. Treat the value as a repeatable product measurement, not a linguistic character count.

Which content is eligible

Only entries parsed as text with an attributable sender enter these records. Images, videos, stickers, GIFs, voice notes, documents, calls and senderless system notices do not become longest text messages. A textual media caption counts only if the parser exposes it as eligible text content.

The result covers only the selected export. Deleted content that is absent from the file, earlier history and messages in another chat cannot be measured.

A long message is not a relationship score

Length can reflect storytelling, instructions, pasted material, an address, an argument or formatting habits. It cannot reveal importance, sincerity, effort, emotional depth or whether the recipient read the message.

Use the checker as a factual record of exported text, not evidence that one participant communicates better or cares more.
