How does WhatsApp text formatting work?
WhatsApp formats text with symbols around words: *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough, three backticks for ```monospace``` and one backtick for `inline code`. Lines starting with "- " or "* " become bulleted lists, "1. " numbered lists and "> " quotes. This formatter adds the symbols for you and shows the result before you send.

WhatsApp formatting symbols
These work in WhatsApp on Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web, desktop and WhatsApp Business:
- *bold*: asterisks on both sides
- _italic_: underscores on both sides
- ~strikethrough~: tildes on both sides
- ```monospace```: three backticks on both sides
- `inline code`: one backtick on both sides
- - item or * item: bulleted list (start of a line)
- 1. item: numbered list (start of a line)
- > text: quote (start of a line)
Why formatting sometimes doesn't work
The symbol must touch the text: *bold* works, but * bold * doesn't. Inline styles also can't span multiple lines, apart from ``` monospace blocks. Lists and quotes need a space after the symbol and must start at the beginning of a line.
The formatter handles these rules for you: it moves stray spaces outside the symbols and applies list and quote prefixes to each selected line.
Formatting without symbols on your phone
In the WhatsApp app you can also long-press selected text and choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Monospace from the menu (on Android, tap ⋮ first). The formatter is faster for longer messages, for combining several styles, or for preparing a broadcast, status or business message on a computer.
