How can I count messages in a WhatsApp chat?
WhatsApp doesn't have a built-in counter that shows how many messages are in a chat, so you have to export the conversation to get an exact number. Open the chat, use Export chat, add the resulting .txt or .zip file to MyChatWrap and open the Snapshot. It shows the full parsed total, each participant's count and share, average messages per day, message types and volume over time — all counted locally in your browser, not uploaded anywhere. This counts the history inside one exported chat; it is not the unread-number badge on your phone.

Count by participant
Compare the number and percentage attributed to each sender. In a group chat, the same calculation ranks every participant with messages in the export.
Messages per day
Normalize a long chat by its date range so a five-year conversation can be compared more fairly with a newer one.
Message-type totals
Separate text, images, videos, GIFs, voice notes, stickers, documents, deleted markers and system entries when the export provides them.
Volume over time
View daily, weekly, monthly or yearly activity and switch to a data table when exact period totals matter more than the chart.

Count a WhatsApp conversation in three steps
1. Export the chat
Open the contact or group information in WhatsApp, choose Export chat and save the file. Without media is usually enough for counting and produces a smaller export.
2. Add the export
Drop the .txt or .zip file above. MyChatWrap parses dates, senders and message placeholders in the browser.
3. Read the breakdown
Start with Total messages, then compare sender share, average per day, message types and the messages-over-time chart for context.
What counts as a message?
The overall total is the number of entries MyChatWrap can parse from the exported history. A normal text, an exported media placeholder, a deleted-message marker and a system event can each appear as an entry. The type breakdown shows how those entries were classified.
Messages attributed to named participants exclude system notices that have no sender. That means the participant totals can occasionally add up to slightly less than the overall parsed total. This is expected for exports containing encryption notices, group joins or similar system activity.
Why the number can differ from what you expected
The counter can only measure the history present in the file. If older messages were deleted, the export was taken from a device without the full history, or WhatsApp omitted older media, the counter cannot recreate what is absent.
Regional date formats and multiline messages are parsed as part of the import process rather than counted as arbitrary lines. A long message that wraps across ten lines is still one message, which is why counting lines in a text editor is unreliable.
Message count is a fact, not a relationship verdict
A 61/39 split describes volume. It does not explain why one person wrote more, whether both people were satisfied, or how much care each message carried. One thoughtful paragraph can matter more than ten short replies.

Count without uploading the conversation
