WhatsApp export troubleshooting guide

WhatsApp export chat not working? Fix the actual failure

If WhatsApp’s Export chat option is missing, the export stalls, the share sheet fails, the saved file disappears, or a TXT or ZIP will not open, use the symptom-matched checks below. Start with a text-only export, confirm Advanced Chat Privacy is off, finish a real save or share action, and preserve the original file before changing it.

Why is WhatsApp chat export not working?

The most common causes are Advanced Chat Privacy blocking export, trying the wrong menu or device, insufficient free storage, a media-heavy export that cannot be packaged or shared, an interrupted share-sheet action, or selecting a backup instead of WhatsApp’s exported TXT or ZIP. Test the same chat without media first. If Export chat is absent, check the chat’s privacy setting rather than repeatedly reinstalling WhatsApp.

Match the symptom before trying a fix

This fictional recovery preview separates a blocked export, a packaging failure, a lost share-sheet file and an unreadable result. The checks diagnose the workflow; they do not repair missing messages or bypass privacy controls.

Export option is missing

Check the open chat’s menu and Advanced Chat Privacy. That setting officially prevents chat export when enabled.

Preparing export is stuck

Retry without media, free device storage, keep WhatsApp in the foreground and avoid locking the phone while it prepares the file.

Share sheet closes or fails

Choose a different destination, or send the generated file to your own WhatsApp chat and download the attachment.

Exported file cannot be found

A share preview is not a completed save. Repeat the export, choose an explicit destination and search for the exact filename.

TXT or ZIP is rejected

Confirm it came from Export chat, contains a transcript, is not an encrypted backup, and remains within MyChatWrap’s 50 MB limit.

Only part of the chat appears

Compare the first and last timestamps in the file. An export can only contain history WhatsApp packaged at that moment.

Fix a failed WhatsApp export in three passes

  1. 1. Identify the exact symptom

Missing option, stalled preparation, failed sharing, lost file, unreadable file and incomplete history have different causes.

  2. 2. Run the smallest clean test

Update WhatsApp, open the exact chat, disable Advanced Chat Privacy only with the authorized participant or admin, and export without media.

  3. 3. Verify the result

Complete a save or share action, keep the original TXT or ZIP unchanged, then check its filename, size, first timestamp and last timestamp.

If Export chat is missing from the menu

First make sure you are inside the individual or group conversation, not on WhatsApp’s main Chats screen. On Android, open the chat and look under the three-dot menu › More › Export chat. On iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact or group name, and look for Export Chat in Chat Info. Menu labels can move between versions, so update WhatsApp before assuming the feature has been removed.

If the command is still absent, inspect Advanced Chat Privacy for that conversation. WhatsApp’s Help Center says that when this setting is enabled, people in the chat cannot export it. In a group, an admin controls the setting; in an individual conversation, either participant can enable it. Ask the authorized person to change it only if everyone is comfortable. Do not try to bypass a privacy choice.

WhatsApp also states that Advanced Chat Privacy applies per chat. One conversation may export normally while another does not, which makes a chat-specific privacy setting more likely than a broken installation. Reinstalling the app is not a sensible first step and can create avoidable backup or history risks.

  • Open the exact conversation before checking its menu
  • Update WhatsApp from the official app store
  • Check Chat Info or Group Info for Advanced Chat Privacy
  • Respect the participant or group admin’s privacy decision

If WhatsApp is stuck on Preparing export

Cancel the attempt and retry with Without media. Photos, videos, documents and voice-note files make the package larger and add work before the operating system can open the share sheet. A text-only export is the best diagnostic because it isolates the transcript from attachment size and sharing limits.

Check that the phone has free local storage, close storage-heavy apps, keep WhatsApp visible and connected to power, and avoid locking the screen during preparation. Then try a recent small chat. If a small text-only chat works but one long media-heavy chat does not, the failure is probably related to packaging size or the chosen destination rather than MyChatWrap.

Do not clear WhatsApp data, delete the conversation or uninstall the app as a routine fix. Confirm that a current backup or supported transfer exists before any destructive troubleshooting, and use WhatsApp’s official support instructions for your device.

If the share sheet opens but no file is saved

WhatsApp creates the export and passes it to iOS or Android’s share interface. Opening a preview, dismissing the panel or tapping an app that never completes the handoff may leave no saved copy. Repeat the export and choose an explicit destination such as Save to Files, Files by Google, My Files, Downloads, Drive, email or another trusted storage app.

When no file-manager destination appears, choose WhatsApp in the share panel and send the export to your own You or Message yourself chat. Note the attachment’s exact filename, download it, and search for that name in the system picker. This is a recovery route for the file handoff; it does not bypass Advanced Chat Privacy because a blocked chat never creates the export.

  • A preview is not necessarily a saved file
  • Finish one explicit save, send or upload action
  • Check Recent and Downloads before exporting again
  • Use Message yourself when Files or Save to Files is unavailable

If the exported TXT or ZIP will not open

Verify that the selected file was created by Export chat. A WhatsApp export is a readable TXT file or a ZIP containing the transcript and, when requested, attachments. An encrypted crypt file, msgstore database, iCloud backup or Google Drive backup is a different product workflow and cannot be analyzed as an exported chat.

Keep the original file unchanged. If it is a ZIP, inspect a copy and confirm that it contains a chat transcript rather than only attachments. Do not rename an encrypted backup to .zip or .txt; changing an extension does not convert the format. MyChatWrap accepts original TXT and ZIP exports up to 50 MB.

A zero-byte file, a ZIP that the operating system reports as damaged, or a transcript with no recognizable message lines should be exported again from WhatsApp. If only one destination produces a damaged file, try another trusted destination before changing anything on the phone.

If messages, dates or media are missing

Open the transcript as plain text and record the first and last message timestamps it contains. That observed range is more useful than assuming a universal export count. View-once messages are not exported according to WhatsApp’s official export guidance, and attachments are not included when you choose Without media even though the transcript may retain media placeholders.

An export cannot recreate messages already deleted, unavailable history, expired media or content that WhatsApp did not package. If completeness matters for legal, employment or dispute purposes, preserve the untouched export and source device, stop editing the only copy, and ask the intended recipient or a qualified professional what form they require.

What the official WhatsApp guidance confirms

WhatsApp’s Help Center documents the normal Export chat route, the choice between exporting with or without media, and that an exported text history is not a backup that can be re-imported. Its Advanced Chat Privacy documentation explicitly says that chat export is unavailable while the setting is enabled.

Those official facts explain the normal workflow and one definitive blocker, but they do not guarantee that every device, share destination or large conversation will package identically. Treat fixed message-count claims and universal folder locations as troubleshooting clues, not promises. Recheck the current WhatsApp Help Center when the app UI changes.

What this troubleshooting page can help establish

  • Whether the export command is hidden by navigation or blocked by chat privacy
  • Whether media size is involved by testing without media
  • Whether the share action actually saved a file
  • Whether the result is an export, backup or damaged package
  • Which date range the exported transcript actually contains

What these fixes cannot do

  • Bypass Advanced Chat Privacy or another participant’s decision
  • Recover deleted, expired or unavailable messages
  • Convert an encrypted backup by renaming its extension
  • Guarantee a complete lifetime history or every attachment
  • Certify an export as authentic, forensic or legally admissible

Troubleshoot without spreading the conversation

Use a destination you control, double-check the recipient before sharing, and delete unnecessary temporary copies after testing. Standard MyChatWrap parsing and deterministic analysis run locally in your browser; the chat content is not uploaded to or stored on the MyChatWrap server.
