How does MyChatWrap count WhatsApp voice notes?

MyChatWrap counts parsed entries classified as voice_note and attributed to a sender. Recognition uses exported audio-omitted placeholders or attached filenames with supported audio extensions such as .opus, .mp3, .m4a, .aac, .wav and .ogg. The counter measures exported message events; it does not play, transcribe, time or interpret the audio.

Chat-wide total

Count every recognized voice_note entry with an attributable sender and show the total for the selected export.

Participant totals and shares

Compare exact sender counts and proportional shares in an eligible two-person conversation.

Group leaderboard

Rank attributed members by voice-note count when an exported chat contains more than two participants.

Media context

Read voice notes alongside images, videos, GIFs, stickers, documents and other parsed media categories.

Period history

Recompute participant voice-note counts for populated weeks, months or years using the same parser classifications.

First appearance

The Timeline can identify the earliest parsed voice_note entry visible in the selected export.

Count WhatsApp voice notes in three steps

  1. 1. Export the conversation

Open the chat information and choose Export chat. Either option may preserve textual placeholders; Include media is needed only if you also want the attached files.

  2. 2. Add the export

Drop the .txt or .zip above. Your browser classifies supported placeholders and filenames and attributes eligible entries to senders.

  3. 3. Compare counts with context

Review the total, participant shares, media mix and period history without inferring what the recordings contained.

How voice notes are recognized

The parser classifies the normalized placeholder audio omitted as voice_note. It also recognizes attached filenames ending in .opus, .mp3, .m4a, .aac, .wav or .ogg. WhatsApp commonly uses .opus for voice notes; the other supported audio extensions are grouped into the requested Voice Notes category even though a filename alone cannot always distinguish a recorded note from another audio file.

Recognition depends on text present in the export and the parser's supported English placeholder or filename rules. Locale-specific wording, renamed files or formats outside the supported map can be classified as generic media, a document or text instead of voice_note.

How totals and shares are calculated

Every attributable entry whose parsed type is voice_note increments the chat-wide total and that sender's voice-note count. The same entry also contributes to the sender's broader media total and message-type breakdown.

In a two-person comparison, the MetricCard shows exact counts and the share of recognized voice-note entries. In a group, the leaderboard can rank all attributed members. Senderless system entries do not receive participant credit.

What the counter does not inspect

The analytics engine does not open or play the audio file, calculate recording duration, transcribe speech, identify speakers, detect language or analyze tone. One ten-second note and one ten-minute recording each contribute one event when both are recognized.

A count cannot show how much was said, why a note was sent, whether it was heard or whether it contained music, forwarded audio or a conventional WhatsApp voice message.

Exports and missing history

Without media often produces the smallest file and can still preserve an audio omitted placeholder. Include media creates a ZIP containing available attachments, but MyChatWrap's counter relies on the parsed message entry rather than listening to those files.

Deleted items, expired view-once media, unsupported placeholders and history outside the export cannot be counted. The first voice note in Timeline means the first recognized occurrence in that file, not necessarily the first ever sent.

What the counter shows

  • The total number of recognized voice_note entries in the export.
  • Participant counts, shares and group rankings.
  • Media context, supported period history and the first recognized occurrence.

What it cannot show

  • Audio duration, transcription, language, speakers or tone.
  • Whether an audio attachment is definitely a native voice recording when classification relies only on its extension.
  • Items missing from the export or represented with unsupported wording or formats.

Count voice notes without uploading the conversation

MyChatWrap parses the export and counts recognized voice-note entries in your browser. Chat content, participant names and attached audio are not sent to or stored on the MyChatWrap server, and no account is required.
