WhatsApp chat backup guide
How to Back Up WhatsApp Chats on iPhone and Android
To back up WhatsApp chats, open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup. On iPhone, tap Back Up Now to save to iCloud; on Android, choose a Google Account and tap Back up. Set a recurring schedule on the same screen and check the date of the last successful backup before changing phones.
How to back up WhatsApp chats on iPhone to iCloud
Use the Apple Account and iCloud Drive you will be able to access when you restore. A general iPhone device backup is not a substitute for checking WhatsApp’s own Chat Backup screen.
- 1On the iPhone, check Settings → your name → iCloud. Turn on iCloud Drive and allow WhatsApp to use it. Confirm there is enough free iCloud and device storage.
- 2Open WhatsApp and tap Settings (or your profile picture) → Chats → Chat Backup.
- 3Choose whether to include videos, then tap Back Up Now. Keep the phone connected until WhatsApp reports a completed backup.
- 4On that same screen, choose Auto Backup and a schedule. Check the Last Backup date before deleting WhatsApp or replacing the phone.
How to back up WhatsApp chats on Android to Google Drive
WhatsApp saves its Android cloud backup to your Google Account. You need Google Play services, enough free space on the phone and account, and a stable connection.
- 1Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
- 2Choose Back up to your Google Account and select a Google Account that you can access later.
- 3Choose a recurring frequency, or tap Back up to create a backup now. You can also choose whether to include videos and whether mobile data may be used.
- 4Wait for completion and check the latest Google Account backup date in Chat backup before switching phones.
Should you turn on automatic WhatsApp backups?
Yes, if you want a recent recovery point without remembering to back up manually. Choose a frequency that fits how often you chat, use Wi-Fi for large backups, and consider excluding videos to save cloud storage. Android WhatsApp backups count toward Google Account storage; iPhone backups use iCloud storage. A full account can stop a new backup from finishing.
Protect your backup with end-to-end encryption
WhatsApp’s End-to-end encrypted backup option is under Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Depending on your device and app version, you can protect the backup with a passkey, password, or 64-digit key. Keep access to that credential: WhatsApp says it cannot recover an encrypted backup for you if you lose the required key or password and cannot reset it from an active WhatsApp session.
How do you restore a WhatsApp chat backup?
Install WhatsApp on the new or reset phone, verify the same phone number, use the same Apple Account/iCloud or Google Account used for the backup, and accept Restore when WhatsApp offers it during setup. The backup must have completed before the old phone was lost or erased. An Android Google Account backup cannot be restored directly as an iPhone iCloud backup, or vice versa; use WhatsApp’s supported phone-migration flow when changing platforms. Do not erase the old phone until the new one shows the chats you need.
Backup versus Export chat: which one do you need?
A WhatsApp cloud backup is for restoring chat history inside WhatsApp. Export chat creates a separate TXT or ZIP copy of one conversation for reading, archiving, or analysis; importing that file is not WhatsApp’s cloud-restore process. If you want to examine one chat with MyChatWrap, export that chat and upload the original TXT or ZIP. MyChatWrap does not read your private iCloud or Google Account backup.
WhatsApp backup stuck or not showing?
First confirm the last successful backup date in WhatsApp. Check Wi-Fi, free space on both the phone and cloud account, the selected account, app updates, and whether videos make the backup too large. On iPhone, verify iCloud Drive and WhatsApp’s iCloud access. On Android, check the selected Google Account and Google Play services. Do not delete an existing backup or uninstall WhatsApp while the only copy of your chats is uncertain.
WhatsApp backup questions
Where are WhatsApp chats backed up on iPhone and Android?
iPhone WhatsApp chat backups use iCloud. Android WhatsApp cloud backups use the selected Google Account. Check WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup for the latest completed backup.
Can I back up WhatsApp without Google Drive or iCloud?
Android may keep local backup data, and WhatsApp supports certain phone-to-phone transfers. An exported TXT or ZIP is a readable archive of one chat, not a restorable full-account backup. On iPhone, WhatsApp’s built-in cloud chat backup uses iCloud.
Can I restore a Google Drive WhatsApp backup on an iPhone?
Not directly through iPhone’s iCloud restore. WhatsApp provides a separate supported Android-to-iPhone migration process; make a new iCloud backup after the transfer completes.
Does WhatsApp backup include photos and videos?
Chat media can be included, but video inclusion is a separate backup setting. Check Include videos before backing up and confirm you have enough storage.
How can I tell whether my WhatsApp backup worked?
Open Chat backup and read the date of the last successful backup. Do this before uninstalling WhatsApp, resetting the phone, or switching devices.
