How to See Who Replies Fastest (and Slowest) in a WhatsApp Chat

A practical way to find real response-time patterns in a WhatsApp conversation — who replies fastest, who takes longest, and how that's changed over time — without counting manually.

"Why do you always take forever to reply?" is a very common text-thread argument, and it's almost never settled by scrolling back and eyeballing timestamps. Response time is one of the easiest things to measure objectively from a chat export — you just need something to actually do the measuring.

What counts as a "response time"

The useful definition isn't just "time between any two messages" — a burst of five messages in a row from the same person isn't five slow replies. A proper response-time metric only measures the gap right before the other person actually replies, and typically excludes very long gaps (like an overnight silence) from an "average," reporting them separately instead so one bad night doesn't skew the whole picture.

How to see it for a real chat

  1. Export the chat from WhatsApp (Chat settings → Export chat → Without media is enough for this).
  2. Upload the .txt or .zip export to MyChatWrap.
  3. Open the Overview dashboard — it breaks down median and average response time per participant, plus how it's trended over the life of the chat.

It's computed entirely in your browser from the export you upload, so nothing about the conversation is sent anywhere just to answer "who's actually slower to reply."

Can I see response time for one specific person in a group chat?

Yes — MyChatWrap breaks response time down per participant, in both 1:1 and group chats.

Does an overnight gap count against someone's average response time?

No — a proper response-time metric excludes unusually long gaps (like sleeping) from the average and reports them separately, so one quiet night doesn't skew the numbers.

Is this based on the whole chat history, or just recent messages?

The whole exported chat history — MyChatWrap also shows how response time has trended over time, not just one overall number.
