Can WhatsApp show my average response time?

WhatsApp does not show a complete historical average or median reply time in a normal chat. An exported conversation contains the timestamps MyChatWrap can analyze locally.

What counts as a reply?

A message counts when it immediately follows a message from a different sender within the same four-hour conversation window. Consecutive messages from one person are not replies.

Why does the calculator use a four-hour window?

An export does not mark conversation boundaries. The four-hour rule prevents an overnight or workday silence from becoming an extremely long reply. It is MyChatWrap's documented methodology, not an official WhatsApp definition.

Is average or median response time more useful?

The median usually describes a typical reply more clearly because a few long gaps affect it less. The average and distribution still provide useful additional context.

Does a slow response mean someone is losing interest?

No. Reply speed has many possible causes that are not recorded in an export. It describes timing, not feelings, effort, or relationship quality.

Does this work for WhatsApp groups?

Yes. MyChatWrap can calculate timing by participant and estimate pairwise reply patterns. Because several people may speak at once, group attribution is more approximate than a two-person comparison.

Are media and deleted messages included?

A media placeholder or deleted-message marker can participate in the sequence when the export includes it with a sender and timestamp. Content absent from the export cannot be analyzed.

Can time zones change the result?

The calculation uses timestamps represented in the export. Travel, device timezone changes, or inconsistent timestamps can affect hour and weekday context; negative out-of-order gaps are excluded.

Is the response time calculator private?

Yes. Standard analysis runs in the browser and does not store the chat content on the MyChatWrap server. You should still keep the exported file and saved results private.

How does a WhatsApp response time calculator work?

A WhatsApp response time calculator measures the gap when a message is immediately followed by a message from somebody else within the same conversation. MyChatWrap shows the chat-wide median, each participant's average and median, the distribution of reply speeds, and patterns by hour and weekday. Gaps of four hours or more begin a new conversation instead of counting as replies. The results describe timing in the exported history; they do not reveal why a person replied quickly or slowly.

A typical reply time

Use the median—the middle measured reply—to describe a typical response without letting one unusually long gap dominate the result.

Average and median by person

Compare both measures for each participant. A reply time belongs to the person who sent the next message.

Response-time ranges

See how many replies fall below 1 minute, within 1–5, 5–15 or 15–60 minutes, or within the 1–2 and 2–4 hour ranges.

Practical thresholds

For two-person chats, compare the cumulative share of replies sent within 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and 1 hour.

Hour and weekday context

Compare median reply time by the hour or weekday when the response was sent, while remembering that an export cannot show work, sleep, travel, or notification context.

Changes across the chat

Inspect participant trends and periods to see whether measured reply timing changed across weeks, months, or a selected date range.

How response time is calculated

MyChatWrap processes messages chronologically. A response time is recorded when a message is immediately preceded by a message from a different sender and its timestamp is not earlier than the previous message. The gap is attributed to the new sender.

A gap of four hours or more starts a new conversation instead of becoming a reply. Consecutive messages from the same sender are not reply times, system notices without a sender do not create participant measurements, and negative gaps caused by out-of-order timestamps are discarded.

WhatsApp exports do not reliably identify which earlier message somebody explicitly answered. The calculation therefore uses message order and a documented four-hour window; it is not a reconstruction of every tapped Reply action.

Average versus median response time

The average adds every eligible reply gap and divides by the number of replies. A few gaps near the four-hour boundary can pull it upward.

The median sorts the gaps and takes the middle value, so it is usually a clearer description of a typical response. Looking at both values and the distribution provides more context than choosing a single winner.

Read reply speed without guessing intent

Response time can show who replied sooner in this particular exported history and when exchanges moved faster or slower. It cannot explain whether somebody was busy, asleep, offline, at work, travelling, or talking elsewhere.

A slow or fast response is not proof of interest, care, honesty, compatibility, or commitment. Treat timing as one observable pattern, not a verdict about a person or relationship.
